Grand Canyon Village Sunday 7/3

We were fortunate to get a camp site with full hook ups at Trailer Village for two nights. We never know where we're going to be any given night so its always a last minute process. Never an issue but we ended up at the grand canyon on July 4th, one of the busiest weekends if the year. Couldn't have gotten here on this weekend if I planned it bit got here now without. Go figure.

Spending the full day here tomorrow then toward Las Vegas the next day.

No fireworks here it anywhere in the southwest it seems due to the very high fire danger. Not sure what we're going to do to celebrate the holiday.

We visited the ruins at Mesa Verde first thing this am. We were out of the campsite before 8a! The drive up was very exhilarating due to the spectacular views, the breathtaking drop offs on the sides of the access road, the lack of shoulders and very little guard rails. There must be a lack of lawyers in these parts because they don't use guard rails and hand rails like they do in ny! The ruins were very interesting and fun to visit. Worth the visit for sure.

We visited four corners (only place 4 states (Utah, Colorado; new Mexico & Arizona)) touch. Was a fun pit stop. Great native American arts & crafts available too.

We took on propane to refill our LPG tank for the first time since ocean city. We needed only 5 gallons to fill the 12 gallon tank. Was nice to know we used so little in over two weeks. The main thing we need gas for is to keep the fridge going when we aren't plugged in to electric (ie all day when rolling). We also use gas for cooking, hot water for dishes & showers and the occasional furnace start up on cool nights.

Speaking of gas, I kept the tank at least 1/2 full today (as opposed to filler when we hit 1/4 as usual) because I looked ahead and figured there weren't going to be lots of gas, stations (or cell signal!) It worked out that I filled up in almost every little town we went thru. We are surely doing our part to stimulate the economy!

We parted ways with route 160 today when it ended near the GC. we had actually been on 160 for two full days. Seemed like an old friend.

The girls watched a movie during one of the "boring" parts. I'm enjoying a great show every day. It's a long running movie with no commercials (save the occasional billboard) on the big screen (wind screen). The scenery is amazing. Will post more pix once we get to WiFi in a few days.

I like to straight new roads out here. Some of the older sections have dips & mounds that make us really bounce. We can make good time on the good flat roads. Lots of hills today that slowed us down to 25-35 mph today!

We were trying to out run a storm coming from the south as we were traveling generally west all afternoon. We could see the rain start to fall but it never appeared to reach the ground before it evaporated. There were mini twisters spinning up the sand from the desert. Finally after 5pm we crossed paths with the storm and the side wind was pushing us to the right more than I had been working against all day. Still no rain. Then all if a sudden the wind stopped for a few moments, then it was coming from the north hard. None of this was strong enough to cause any damage or be more than a navigation pain but it was an odd feeling for a few minutes.

Off to sleep in prep for our big day.
