We had a really great visit to SF with Uncle Jay and Aunt Louise! It was so nice for me to visit them in SF again after more than 15 years and really great for the girls to get to visit them for the first time. Jay & Louise come our way often and many times over the years so it’s nice to get to go to the left coast and see them. Many thanks to Jay for being a great tour guide and Louise for two great meals and lots of guidance too!
Today we crossed the Golden Gate Bridge and drove up to Muir Woods national Park with Uncle Jay to see the Redwoods. Was an impressive sight to see the towering trees. Lucy did another Jr Ranger program. The Jr Ranger program is a great tool to engage the kids. She gets right into it and wants to complete everything in the books for her age group and often does extra work as well.
After Muir Woods we went to Stinson Beach so Lucy could actually swim fully in the Pacific. She went in & under twice. Once for the bucket list and the second time because I wasn’t ready with the camera the first time. Will try to post a video of the dunk too.
After the beach we searched out more raw milk for the trip home. One can buy raw milk in the stores in CA. now there’s another something special about CA!
After we were done our shopping we hit the road in earnest. It was almost 4p when we departed. Much later than I had planned but our days seem to slide like that often. I guess that’s why we are 4 weeks to the half-way point of the trip and need to be home in less than two!
We’ve given up on the luxury of staying off the interstates and highways and are traveling exclusively via the fastest route possible. So we headed out on I-80 for the Sierra Nevada mountain and Nevada. We were at sea level in the afternoon and by the time we stopped for the night we had cleared over 7,000’! there were many snow covered peaks as we crossed the mountains today. The terrain, rocky mountains, evergreens and full & whitewater type rivers reminded us all of home more than anywhere we’d been. We all can’t want to be home!
It was nice to be heading east finally so that as we travel late in the day I’m not fighting the sun in the eyes as I tire. I’m also hoping we have more of a tail wind heading east. There were surely some heavy head winds that we fought in places like Kansas and Colorado.
I realized today that we have traveled across the country and I haven’t run into anyone I know that we weren’t already planning to see. I usually bump into someone I know on most every journey of any kind. Trips only half over so we’ll see.
I know I mentioned Google tools before but I am so pleased with the utility and functionality of tools like navigation, Maps, Search and My Tracks. We have great apps on the Android HTC Incredible like a Camp & RV app that makes finding a campground easy and a discount campground program as well as the weather, music, books on tape, timer for cooking and computer time, listening to red sox game and reading updates, and more. Oh and did I mention it’s a phone too? J
