Rapid City, SD Th 7/14

We hauled our butts today all the way from Yellowstone across the entire state of Wyoming to Rapid City, SD. Nearly 500 miles!

And part of the journey wound through Big Horn National Park which was a very pleasant surprise.

As we started across WY I could see a mountain range looking with another behind it and started to wonder if and how we were going to cross them.

As we approached the Big Horn Mountains we dropped into a ravine all of a sudden at the base of the mountains and I thought that felt like we were going in the wrong direction (down instead of up). The feeling was quickly reversed at the far end of the little ravine as we started climbing, and climbing and climbing! We climbed through some spectacular country all the way to Granite Pass at 9,033’! once we got out of Big Horn NP and onto I-90 it was relatively flat (anything would have seemed flat!) with long rolling hills and plateaus toward the Black Hills of SD.

We covered all this ground in spite of a 1 hour rest stop this afternoon so I could take a nap.

We are spending the night 10 miles from Mt Rushmore. We got to Skype with Julie this evening which is always a treat!

We had a dinner of tacos. Lucy swam before skyping & dinner and again after. I did laundry in between making dinner and skyping and after dinner. Three or four trips to the laundry building is a little exercise which I need. A late evening shower is a great way to cool off and get ready for sleep.

After the free breakfast and all  you can eat pancakes in the morning, we’ll make our way to Rushmore. I expect we’ll be on the road again in earnest by noon and head toward the arch in St Louis. That will be a 2 ½ day trip I estimate. Then to Indiana and Cleveland.

We’re in the Mountain time zone now so only two hours different than home.

Hoping for a better night sleep than the last couple. Not that I’m awake for long periods but waking and falling back asleep often.

Keep us in your prayers for safe travels. Looking forward to being home!

Jay
