San Fran Sat 7/9

We left Pisco Beach around 9a (pretty good for us) and headed north toward SF. We had a homemade dinner waiting for us at Uncle Jay and Aunt Louise’s so I was motivated!

We traveled along Rt 101 for the first part of the journey but moved over to Rt 1 along the Big Sur area to enjoy the pacific ocean views and scenery. I thought we’d stop for lunch and it would be a good time to take a dip in the Pacific so we could say we swam in it. But it was cold and we never really stopped for lunch in order to make our dinner date. And we were way above the ocean level for much of the day in the Big Sur area.

After being at 6, 7 and 8,000’ elevations for so long it was odd to see signs that said 65’…we actually stayed at 17’ last night. We are right on the water in Pacifica this evening but we are at 70’ right above the water. It is cold and windy along the ocean in these parts. Quite a change from LA.

The coast in this part of CA is rocky and the terrain of the land is much more mountainous and rises quickly from  the water. The Rt 1 along the ocean was a very pleasant drive and offered lots of scenery and excitement (looking straight down 3-500’ to the ocean makes my heart beat fast!)

The seal vista was a great find today and a nice break from driving. It was fun to watch them laying and rolling on the beach. And watching the males battle for dominance was interesting too.

We had a very nice evening with Jay & Louise. Dinner a roasted chicken with veggies, salad and ice cream. It was so nice to have a good meal after the quick food we’ve been relying on lately as we have tried to travel more and I’ve cooked less. It was great to catch up with them and tell them some of our stories. We spent some time planning for our tour of SF tomorrow with Uncle Jay as our tour guide.

I spent some quality time with our beloved & bedraggled road atlas this evening working on a schedule to get back before 7/23. I think it is possible if we are prompt in departing and put in some long days. I allowed for a full day in Yellowstone, maybe making it to St Louis (but that stop may become optional) and just an overnight stop in Indy to visit Lucy’s friends. Will be a push but we will attempt it for sure.

Tomorrow we’ll spend the day in SF seeing  the sights. More later.

Jay
